His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, heads the delegation of the State of Kuwait to the Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement, held on July 13-14, 2021, under the title “The Non-Aligned Movement is at the heart of multilateral efforts in response to global challenges.” His Excellency delivered the speech of the State of Kuwait at the meeting, the text of which was:
“Your Excellency Jehon Bermov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan,
Your Excellencies, heads of the participating delegations, ladies and gentlemen,
Peace, mercy and blessings of God,
It gives me a great pleasure to participate in this high level forum to reflect on what we have achieved since the eighteenth summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, held in Baku in October 2019, and it seems as if we were then in a world that changed our world today, while the world witnessed turmoil, wars, famines, disasters and epidemics, the last of which was a century ago, they all have passed, but the COVID-19 pandemic is the first of its kind for the Non-Aligned Movement countries.
As we reflect on our decisions in the Non-Aligned Movement, we can only continue to be optimistic about what the member states of the movement have proven to be at the heart of international efforts to respond to the international challenge of the pandemic.
The vision, principles and objectives of the Non-Aligned Movement exist today as they were in the past. We are still working for a world filled with peace, equality, cooperation and prosperity for all, guided by the Charter of the United Nations, and during the State of Kuwait’s membership in the Security Council for the period of 2018-2019, Kuwait was committed to those principles in word and deed, it stood against foreign aggression and interference, as it called for respecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, and called for accountability, protection, assistance and development, and we have done that inside and outside the Council, and we are still committed to that covenant today, aligning with the international community in pursuit of justice and resistance to the adversities that surround it. While the State of Kuwait was facing the epidemic internally, it extended a helping hand to the World Health Organization in order to alleviate the impact of the epidemic on a number of countries as well as to support the international campaign for vaccines, and our world today was not ready for the epidemic and its repercussions, which has called for shifting priorities towards food security, strengthening the health and education systems, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We hope that the chapters of the pandemic will be behind us during our next meeting in New York, or in Belgrade, and I would like to thank the Republic of Serbia for its initiative to host the high-level meeting on the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of the creation of the Non-Aligned Movement, and also express my gratitude to the Republic of Azerbaijan for its effective management of the work of the Non-Aligned Movement during a difficult time for the world and the movement's members.
Peace, mercy and blessings of God.”
