The Board of Trustees of the Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sumait Award for African Development held a meeting chaired by His Excellency Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, to discuss developments related to the award for this year in the field of health. During the meeting, the Board discussed criteria for selecting the award winners, in addition to its nomination, evaluation and selection processes, and discussing other topics on the agenda, within the framework of the State of Kuwait providing support and encouragement to organizations, individuals and international institutions working for African development in exchange for exemplary and effective services, projects and programs in the three areas. The award is for education, health and food security.
 
His Excellency the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sumait Award for African Development, recalled the noble initiative of the late Amir of the State of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, in 2013 to launch an annual award of one million US dollars In support of the three vital and important areas, as it is a clear indication of the wisdom of His Highness, may God have mercy on him, and after his consideration towards the importance of developing and enhancing the role of education, health systems and food security, which has clearly demonstrated and proven the need to mobilize international cooperation in the repercussions of the emerging Corona pandemic (Covid-19) that swept through the entire world, stressing this framework is essential to face similar future challenges.
 
It is worth noting that the initiative announced by the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, in the work of the Third Arab-African Summit hosted by the State of Kuwait in November 2013 to support the development of African countries, and naming the award in the name of the late Dr. Abdul Rahman Al-Sumait, in honor and perpetuity of the great human legacy he left and his charitable works on the African continent.
 
The award’s board of trustees, made up of high international and local personalities, supervises the award’s procedures. The Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences has been entrusted with supervising and managing the award and submitting its reports to the Board of Trustees. The Foundation also provides all forms of logistical and administrative support for the award.
 
The Board of Trustees of the Al-Sumait Award for African Development includes the Director-General and former Chairman of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, Mr. Abdul Latif Al-Hamad, the Director-General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Mr. Marwan Al-Ghanim, and the Assistant Director-General for Education Affairs at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Professor Stefania Giannini, Assistant Director-General of the World Health Organization Dr. Jawad Mahjour, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, President of the Ghana Institute of Nuclear Energy, former Deputy Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Dr. Kwaku Anning, Chief Scientist of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Dr. Ismahane El-Wafi, Co-Chairman of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates, Executive Director of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, former Assistant and Regional Secretary-General of the United Nations Development Program for Africa, Dr. Abdouli Jannah, and Director-General of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, His Excellency Dr. Khaled Al-Fadil.
